‘ Orbital order

Quantum orbital liquid is the new state of matter in which the orbital occupancy does not fix despite the dead charge degrees of freedom. NMR observes 3d orbitals. The cubic provskite crystals LaTiO3 and YTiO3 have been proposed to be the primal candidate of the orbital liquid.
We have investigated the 3d orbital by analyzing the electric and magnetic hyperfine coupling tensors and revealed 3d orbital ordering in LaTiO3 and YTiO3. The electron quadrupole moment is significantly suppressed in LaTiO3 with antiferromagnetic order, indicating the presence of orbital fluctuations.
